Nam Phoun National Protected Area, Laos
 
Location: Sayabouli 1,912 sq km
Ecotourism Activities Available: None yet
Key Species: Substantial elephant population estimated at 350 wild animals, Lar gibbon, gaur, tiger, dhole, serow, silvered langur and Asiatic black bear. There is evidence that Sumatran rhinos may still exist here.
Habitat: Steep and rugged ridges mostly of Mesozoic sandstone and shale. Summits along the Thai border reach a maximum of 1,790m. Three rivers drain eastward to the Mekong: Nam Phui, Nam Phoun and Nam Lai. The majority of the NPA is mixed deciduous forest dominated by bamboo as a result of regular burning. Afzelia is dominant in upper canopy. Teak is also present at lower elevations. There are at least 33 mineral licks scattered throughout the NPA.
Access: From the main Sayaburi-Paklay highway, there are roads leading in to the NPA southwest from Ban Nam Phui via Pak Song to Ban Navene, and westwards from Pak Lay to Thong Mixai.
